Structure and routine is extremely important to children from an early age so the following pages will give you an insight into the daily routine, atmosphere, programme of activities and organisation for each year group at Pownall Hall School

Form Five

Form 5 are busy right from the word go. Registration begins at 8.30am and children are either reading quietly, attacking spelling workbooks, tackling computer based literacy activities or devouring comprehension cards with a partner. Children leave the classroom to head off for choir rehearsals, music practices, literacy support sessions or House Meetings and Assembly. All this before lessons even start.

The morning’s five lessons are mostly devoted to the core curriculum subjects of English, Maths and Science where the children are split into smaller ability sets. Humanities and Languages are taught in whole class settings and the children learn to be independent as they move around the school and remember their timetable. Coats and hats may be left on pegs in the form room but bags are filled with equipment, and relevant subject books await them in various specialist classrooms. During some morning break times, extra literacy activities are offered or children join the Buddy Group in the Pre-Prep playground. After a delicious lunch, there are always clubs to do at lunchtime, including chess, art, and drama groups.

Afternoons provide more stimulation, the opportunity to join Year 6 in Games lessons and offer the pride of representing the school in many sporting fixtures. Art and DT continue to be great favourites where, once again, the children are given maximum attention in smaller groups. Homework might be a bit of a bind but there is always the relief of attending one of the many after-school clubs such as cookery, mad science, judo or dance, before having to knuckle down to the final ‘work’ of the day.
