Reception

Pupils in Reception are taught by a fully qualified and experienced teacher and full time Teaching Assistant who liase closely with the Headteacher and Head of Pre-Prep. This year we have two Reception Classes, taught by Mrs Spence and Miss Ardern who plan together. 

The class teacher teaches the six areas of learning in a fun and stimulating way. Music and PE are taught by specialist staff in line with the rest of school. The children are encouraged to be independent learners; the classroom is organised with areas of continuous provision which are enhanced by the class teacher.

The day starts at 8.30am where the children are welcomed by the class teacher and Teaching Assistant with settling in activities. The children attend the Pre-Prep assembly every day. This includes songs, stories, guidance and discussion on various aspects that affect their life, and others.

During the morning the focus is on laying firm foundations in number work, phonics, writing and reading and the class teacher hears every child read individually on a daily basis.
In the afternoons we offer opportunities and experiences within the wider curriculum and encourage exploration, discovery and creativity through independent, structured and focus activities which relate to the topic being studied. There is also time to follow children’s indiviual interests and provide opportunities to allow them to develop these.

The Reception children join the rest of the Pre-Prep for breaktimes and for lunch. They have further access to the outdoor area and a free-flow system operates between the two classes and the outdoor area. The school day ends for Reception children at 3.45pm when each child is handed over to their parent/carer by the class teacher.
